Computing Hardware Standard at Franklin & Marshall

The incoming first year students (Class of 2011) were recommended by the Faculty Committee on Academic Technology to purchase a MacBook or MacBook Pro portable system with wireless capability. These systems include a minimum of 1GB of RAM with a SuperDrive DVD-R/CD-RW. These systems also include ethernet, firewire and USB ports. Space is a premium in the residence halls so we do not recommend tower units with large monitors.

Nearly three-quarters of the first year students purchase a computer from the College. Of those students that chose to purchase from the College, nearly 100% selected the portable MacBook or MacBook Pro with wireless capability.

The current employee desktop minimum standard consists of an Ethernet ready Macintosh with a G3/G4 processor, 15" multiscan color monitor, 256 megabytes of RAM, and a CD-ROM drive.
