What is eDisk?

eDisk is personal space for electronic document storage and information exchange for the Franklin & Marshall community. eDisk supports both file and web sharing and provides private and public access.

Franklin & Marshall students can use their eDisks to store assignments, to move files from computer to computer at school and at home, to publish digital, "virtual" portfolios, or just create personalized web sites.

eDisk for College faculty also includes electronic space for exchanging files and web-based information with students registered in Franklin & Marshall courses. In the Courses sections of faculty eDisks, access to the course-specific information is available only to students officially registered in these courses. Here, students are able to submit files for a course or access information unique to a course.

Who has eDisk space at F&M?

eDisk @ Franklin & Marshall is available for all members of the Franklin & Marshall community and is provided for the storage and exchange of electronic resources.

eDisk accounts are automatically generated using lists of currently enrolled Franklin & Marshall students, and College faculty and employees. In unique instances (e.g., students studying abroad, faculty on sabbatical, etc.) eDisk accounts may not be automatically created. Once an account has been created, it remains active until the owner leaves the College.

If you are a Franklin & Marshall community member and do not have personal eDisk space, please contact the Franklin & Marshall Help Desk.

How can I access my eDisk?

Files can be moved onto or from your eDisk in a couple of ways, including drag-copying to and from a Macintosh desktop or using file transfer (FTP) software like FETCH. You can also use a web browser to view files on your eDisk.

Individual eDisks for the Franklin & Marshall community can be located by using the following standardized address:

eDisk on the web: http://edisk.fandm.edu/your.name
Examples: http://edisk.fandm.edu/ben.franklin/
http://edisk.fandm.edu/ima.student/
NOTE: Within eDisk URLs, the user name portion (e.g., ben.franklin) is LOWER case sensitive.
To be safe, use lower case in eDisk URLs!
eDisk via file sharing: eDisk.fandm.edu/eDisk/People/*/first name.last name/
* first letter of your last name
Examples: eDisk.fandm.edu/eDisk/People/F/ben.franklin/
eDisk.fandm.edu/eDisk/People/S/ima.student/

NOTE: In order to take full advantage of eDisk services, be sure that the F&M Network Installer has been run on your Macintosh.

Special note for Windows users: You can access eDisk via Windows file sharing. Click this link for instructions.

To select or to modify your unified password, visit the Passwords at Franklin & Marshall web site.

How much eDisk space do I have? (Disk Quotas)

Franklin & Marshall faculty have 1 GB of permanent eDisk space. All others (staff, students, and groups) have 300 MB.

eDisk accounts which exceed the allocated quota will not permit the addition of any files until the total disk storage amount is brought below allocated disk space levels.

Here is a screen shot of the error message you will receive when you have exceeded your eDisk quota and try to copy another file to your space:

To check the amount of eDisk space you are using, click the eDisk folder that has your user name as its name. Then, from the Finder's FILE menu, select GET INFO. The size of your folder is reported in the Info window. If this size is greater than the allocated amount, you will need to remove files from eDisk.

NOTE: Faculty requiring more than 1 GB should send an email to the Helpdesk. Students requiring more than 300 MB, for curricular uses only, should have their faculty member send an email to the Helpdesk.

Who has access to my files on my eDisk?

Items on your eDisk are available to a variety of different groups depending on where you place the files. Some files are available only to you, some are available to everyone in the world. Faculty can choose to share course-restricted files; that is, only students registered in a current course can access this information.

Web Access:
Information you choose to publish on the web in your SITES folder is available to the world. Within the Sites folder, the exceptions are files within any course-restricted folder; e.g., GSE640. Information within course-restricted folders are available through a web browser to students currently registered in the course.

File Access:
Files contained within an eDisk PUBLIC folder are currently available to any Franklin & Marshall community member via filesharing. Only registered eDisk users can access files in another eDisk users Public folder. So in this case, "Public" means the eDisk community, not the entire world.

Files stored within the PRIVATE folder are available only to you.

The DESKTOP and LIBRARY folders are used when logging into public access computers such as those in the Library or Computer Workroom. These extraneous folders in your personal eDisk folder should not be used in any other circumstances other than in public access spaces and can safely be ignored.
