Before starting these instructions, you need to obtain the Printer Name assigned by Computing Services for your printer. This information is on a label that has been placed on the printer by Computing Services. On the label, the Printer Name appears first. That printer name has been designated as the printer's named IP address.
Additionally, you will need to know the printer manufacturer, model name/number, and the installed options (memory configuration, duplex, etc). This information is available from your Department/Office Secretary or Office Coordinator.
There is a slight difference in the instructions between operating system versions. If you are not sure which version of the operating system your computer is running, go to your APPLE MENU and select ABOUT THIS MAC. In the About This Mac window, the version number is listed just below MAC OS X.
Go to your APPLE MENU and select SYSTEM PREFERENCES.
The SYSTEM PREFERENCES PANE appears.
Double-click the PRINT & FAX icon.
The PRINT & FAX pane appears.
If the lock on the bottom of the PRINT & FAX pane appears as a closed padlock, click once on the lock, enter the administrator's password for your computer when prompted, then click once on the OK button.
Next, delete all the existing printer setups for network printers. Select a printer in the list, then click once on the DELETE PRINTER (minus sign) button.
To add a printer, click once on the ADD PRINTER (plus sign) button.

- In the top portion of the pane, click once on IP BROWSER.
- In the PROTOCOL: drop down, if not selected, then select LINE PRINTER DAEMON - LPD.
- In the ADDRESS: edit box, type the name of your printer. As soon as the Printer Browser detects the printer, a message appears below the edit box: Valid and complete address.
- The Printer Browser then automatically fills in the NAME: edit box, and starts searching for the printer driver associated with your printer. If found, the model name of your printer appears in the PRINT USING: option.
- In the LOCATION: edit box, type the name of your department.
- If the Printer Browser cannot locate the correct printer driver, then it will assign a GENERIC driver. If this occurs to you, then proceed with these instructions, and when finished, send an email to the Help Desk and let them know that you need to have the printer driver installed on your computer. In your email message to the Help Desk, please include the manufacturer and model of the printer.
Click once on the ADD button.
The Printer Browser attempts to determine any hardware options that may have been installed on your printer. If it cannot determine the options, the INSTALLABLE OPTIONS pane appears.
Select the appropriate options, and click once on the CONTINUE button.
You are then taken back to the Printer Browser, at which point you can either add more printers or close the Printer Browser.
You are now ready to print with your newly configured printer.
