Retrospect Client for OS X Installation & Set up


PLEASE NOTE: It is critical that the instructions for installing Retrospect Client are performed correctly. If you do not follow our instructions, we will not be able to perform the automatic back up!

This automatic backup service is provided by Computing Services through the Retrospect Client is available to Faculty and Professional Staff only. All users, especially Students, are encouraged to back up important documents to a CD or an iPod.


This installation requires that you restart your computer, therefore we recommend that you print a hard copy of these instructions.

To install Retrospect Client for remote backup of your computer, click the link below to initiate the download. Authentication for the Software Server requires your short username and unified password, the same as your email. (The short name format is the first initial and a maximum of seven letters of the last name.)

Once the download is complete, the image file, entitled retropsect_OS_X.dmg, appears on your desktop. Locate and double-click the RETROSPECT_OSX.dmg image file. Disk Copy launches, mounts the RETROSPECT_CLIENT_OSX volume on your desktop, and opens the window.

Locate and double-click INSTALL OS X CLIENT.

The AUTHENTICATE dialog appears. Type your OS X username and password that you use to log on to your personal computer, or was created when OS X was installed on your computer.

When the INSTALL OS X CLIENT window appears, click once on the INSTALL button.





PLEASE NOTE: it is critical that the next two steps are performed correctly. If you do not use the correct password, we will not be able to set up your computer for automatic back up!

In order to establish the identity of your new Retrospect Client on the network, you must enter a password in two separate dialog boxes, and then click OK. The password to type in the edit box is:

Next, the installer asks you to verify that it is OK for Retrospect to back up your computer if you have your personal firewall turned on. We recommend that everyone on campus click the YES button.



When the installer is finished, an INSTALLATION WAS SUCCESSFUL dialog appears. Click once on the RESTART button.



Once your Mac has completely restarted, the RETROSPECT CLIENT folder window should be open on your Desktop. If not, open your APPLICATIONS folder, and then the RETROSPECT CLIENT folder.

The next step is to turn on your backup software. Double-click the RETROSPECT CLIENT icon to launch the application.



In the top portion of the RETROSPECT CLIENT click once in the ON radio button.

Close the RETROSPECT CLIENT window.



The last, and very important, step is to inform Computing Services that your Mac is ready for back up. Send an email to the username Larry with the subject line: Ready for backup.
