ACCESS RESTRICTIONS - allows you to control what data is backed up.

  • Read Access Only - allows us to backup but not restore your Mac. If you turn on this option, you will have to turn it off in order for Computing Services to restore your Mac if the need arises.
  • Private Files/Folders/Volumes - lets you designate a file, folder, or volume as private. If your file, folder, or volume name begins with •(Option/8), and there is a check in the checkbox of this option, the file, folder, or volume will not be backed up.

NOTIFICATION - allows you to specify when you have been backed up, and if you have not been backed up for a period of time. By default, both of these options are turned on.

  • The Notify after Backup tells the server to notify you after your backup is complete and requires that you click on the OK button to dismiss the message.
  • Notify if no Backup in n days tells the server to notify you if your Mac has not been backed up in the specified amount of time. By default, this preference is set to 7 days. Our Retrospect server is set up to do a complete backup of everyone in cycles. Once the first cycle completes, the second begins. It usually only takes a few days for one cycle. Computing Services recommends that you set yours to 10 in case the server is temporarily behind schedule. A ten day option gives us more leeway in the recovery process and may eliminate unnecessary phone calls and email to the Help Desk.

BACKUP SERVER - allows you to control when your Mac should be backed up by the server. Typically, you would use this option to initiate or defer a backup.

  • As soon as possible enables the server to perform your backup as soon as it is able. Turn on this option when you want to initiate a backup.
  • According to normal schedule enables the server to perform backups on a rotating basis. Backup schedule is based on the length of time elapsed since the previous backup.
  • After: prevents the server from backing up your Mac before the specified time and date, up to one week from the present time.
