To use the Franklin & Marshall Library search services (such as Lexis/Nexis) from off-campus locations, Proxy Service is necessary to use in conjunction with your Internet Service Provider's connection.
PLEASE NOTE: This document covers the proxy server set up for Internet Explorer, version 5.2.2 and Netscape Navigator, version 7.0. While the instructions may work for other versions of the browsers, Computing Services' Help Desk does not provide technical support for browsers not covered in this document.
Authentication for the Proxy Server requires your short username and unified password, the same as your email.
The first step, regardless of which browser you use, is to connect to your ISP the way you do normally.
Internet Explorer, version 5.2.2
Internet Explorer, version 5.2.2 uses the System Preferences Network pane for proxy access information.
CONFIGURING YOUR SYSTEM PREFERENCES NETWORK PANE
To set up your System Preferences for proxy access, click on the SYSTEM PREFERENCES icon on your Dock or go to your APPLE menu and select SYSTEM PREFERENCES.
In the System Preferences window, click once on the NETWORK icon.
In your NETWORK pane, click once on the PROXIES tab.
Click once on the WEB PROXY (HTTP) check box.
Enter the following information into the appropriate edit boxes:
ADDRESS: proxy.fandm.edu
PORT: 3128
When you have finished entering the information, click on the APPLY NOW button in the lower right portion of the dialog.
Go to the SYSTEM PREFERENCES menu and select QUIT.
Launch Internet Explorer.
NOTE: If you have your Internet Explorer preferences set to open to a blank page, you will need to type the Library web server address into the URL address box:
http://library.fandm.edu
A NAME and PASSWORD dialog box appears. Type your short user name into the USER ID: edit box and your unified password into the PASSWORD: edit box.
Please Note: There is a checkbox here which allows you to set Internet Explorer to remember your password. We do not recommend that you do so. The password prompt reminds you that you are using the Proxy Server, and in most cases, you do not want to use the Proxy Server at home because this will slow down your network connection. We recommend that you only use the Proxy Server when you want to connect and use one of F&M services which require an Franklin & Marshall address, like the Library's search services.
Click once on the OK button.
You are now able to access all of the Library services as if you are on campus.
When you are finished using the Library services, we strongly recommend that you turn off your proxy server access in the System Preferences Network pane. Simply click once on the check box for WEB PROXY (HTTP), and then click on the APPLY NOW button. The address and port infomation will be stored, but your proxy access is turned off.
PLEASE NOTE: While it is possible that you can enter and save your proxy server username and password into Internet Explorer's Preferences, Proxy settings, we do not recommend that you do so. Having to enter your username and password each time you want to access the Library services will remind you that you are 'tunnelling' through the proxy server and that you should turn off the settings in the System Preferences Network pane when you do not need to use the Proxy Server. By using the Proxy Server only when needed your Internet connection functions at optimal speed.
Netscape Navigator, version 7.0
Netscape Navigator, version 7.0 uses its own Preferences for proxy access information and not the System Preferences Network pane.
CONFIGURING NETSCAPE
Launch Netscape Navigator.
Go to the EDIT menu, and select PREFERENCES. The PREFERENCES dialog box appears.
In the CATEGORY: section of the Preferences dialog box, click on the ADVANCED disclosure triangle.
Once the Advanced category expands, click on PROXIES.
In the right portion of the window, click once in the MANUAL PROXY CONFIGURATION radio button.
Next, enter the following information into the appropriate edit boxes:
HTTP Proxy: proxy.fandm.edu
PORT: 3128
Click once on the OK button to close the Preferences dialog box.
Type the Library web server address into the URL address box:
http://library.fandm.edu
A USER NAME and PASSWORD dialog box appears. Type your short user name into the User Name: edit box and your unified password into the Password: edit box.
Please Note: We do not recommend that you place a check in the Use Password manager to remember these values checkbox. The password prompt reminds you that you are using the Proxy Server, and in most cases, you do not want to use the Proxy Server at home because this will slow down your network connection. We recommend that you only use the Proxy Server when you want to connect and use one of Franklin & Marshall services which require an Franklin & Marshall address, like the Library's search services.
Click once on the OK button.
You are now able to access all of the Library services as if you are on campus.
When you are finished using the Library services, we recommend that you turn off your proxy server access in the Netscape Preferences, Proxies panel. Simply click once on the radio button for DIRECT CONNECTION TO THE INTERNET, and then click on the OK button. The address and port infomation will be stored, but your proxy access is turned off.
