The Franklin & Marshall password server has a restriction of eight characters for a username. This eight character username is referred to as your short name.
The short name format is the first initial and a maximum of seven letters of the last name. This short name is what your email client application uses to check and verify your account with the mail server, and what you use to log onto myDiplomat. As an example, we will use the fictitious student named Ima Student. Her short name is:
istudent
However, because we would like to provide an easy to know email address for everyone, we have set up a long name for each account. The long name utilizes all the characters in a name. Everyone at Franklin & Marshall has both a short name (to accommodate the server), and a long name (to insure ease of use of the email system).
The structure for the long name is the first name, followed by a period (.) and then the last name: firstname.lastname. Using the above example, Ima's long name is:
ima.student
The full email address to be given to people outside Franklin & Marshall, used on business cards or elsewhere is this format:
long.name@fandm.edu
Or in Ima's case:
ima.student@fandm.edu
To make it simple to understand when to use what name:
Use the short name to log onto the server, either through your email client to get your mail or your web browser to access myDiplomat or web mail, or to access your eDisk account.
Use the long name only when you are giving someone your email address or when you want to send an email to someone on campus.
