Installing and Using VPN for Windows
The VPN client software is available to Franklin & Marshall community members using PCs. This VPN software is required in order to use the wireless network on campus, and to use the Library databases from off campus. Additionally, the VPN software provides extra security when connecting to the internet using your home service provider, or while you are connected to the campus network via ethernet. Using VPN also provides Franklin & Marshall community members with the ability to access web pages that are limited to users connecting from on campus while they are not on campus.

All Franklin and Marshall students and professional staff members can download College licensed software from the
Software Server. You can reach the software server directy by going to
software.fandm.edu. You will be required to authenticate using your
universal username and password Once you have successfully logged into the software server you will see a list of available software for your operating system. You can click on the link in the Title column to begin the download. Please Note. If you are logging on from a Mac, you will only be able to see Mac software and vice versa. You cannot currently download software for other platforms. |
|
Netscape Users Please Note: By default, Netscape may add a .php extension to the filename of your download file. Delete the .php in the file name, and the installer functions as expected.
Double-click the file that you downloaded, entitled fandm-win-VPN-4.8.01.exe, and the installer is launched. Click the Next button to bypass the introduction. You will be asked to agree to the software license. Click once on the yes button to agree.
You are then asked to choose a destination folder for the software. The default destination is C:\Program Files\Cisco Systems\VPN Client. You can select a different target by clicking on the Browse… button. Click the Next button to move onto the next section.
|
|
The default folder name the installer uses is Cisco Systems VPN Client. You may change the folder name if you prefer. When ready click on the Next button. |
The installer proceeds to install all the necessary software components. This may take serveral minutes. When the installation is finished you are prompted to restart your computer. You can choose not to restart your computer at that point, but you will have to restart your computer before you can use the new software.
After your computer restarts, select the VPN Client from the Cisco Systems VPN Client folder (or from the name you selected in the earlier step).
|
All of the settings (except your username and password) are preconfigured. You will have two Connection Entry choices.
Use fandm-wireless if you are on campus and intend to connect to the internet wirelessly. Use fandm-internet if you are connecting to VPN from off-campus, using your home service provider, or if you are using VPN from on campus via ethernet. While it is not required to use VPN while you are connected via ethernet, it is a good idea to use the extra security that VPN offers when visiting sensitive password protected sites such as online banking account websites or while making online credit card transactions. |
|
Once you select your connection method and click connect you are prompted for your VPN username and password. All Franklin and Marshall students and employees can now use their 'unified' username and password to log in. If you are not sure what your password is please contact the Help Desk.
Once connected there is an icon that looks like a lock in your system tray.
Right clicking on this icon displays a menu which allows you to check the status off your connection and to disconnect.
